Introduction to Don Spiva

I have been married for over 44 years. We have four adult sons. My wife and I have lived in Merced for about 40 years and have been involved in numerous organizations connected to the city. I am a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1969 to 1974. I hold a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Organizational Management and Human Resources from the University of San Francisco.

Prior to my real estate career I have done several different jobs which has prepared me to serve you.

I was sole proprietor of my own business “Spiva Property Inspection” for the past 7 years. My eldest son and I performed home and property inspections for potential home buyers, banks and finance companies in the Central California area.

I was the former Chief Building Official for the City of Merced for 15 years and the Building Official in Cochise County, Arizona. I was one of twelve department heads within the City of Merced. During my tenure with the City of Merced I supervised 25 employees. My department was responsible to ensure construction of homes and commercial building met the standards of the California Building Codes. My department, also reviewed and inspected all items required under the Fire Code for new businesses. My department was responsible to inspect all public works infrastructure when being installed by private contractors. When I retired from the City of Merced I was hired by Cochise County, Arizona as the Chief Building Official to help implement the Building Codes throughout the county for the first time.

I worked for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) for 10 years doing various jobs within the company. I was trained as one of the first Certified Energy Auditors along with 20 other individuals for the State of California. I was promoted to New Business Representative, meeting with new customers requiring extension of our facilities to their homes. I was promoted again to Senior New Business Representative responsible to collect all pertinent contracts and coordinate construction work to install our facilities within large commercial and residential developments.

After my Honorable Discharge from the Navy I went into the construction field as an apprentice brick layer. I obtained my contractors licenses shortly after finishing my apprentice program and began my own construction business doing all aspects construction. I am a licensed General Building Contractor and General Engineering Contractor.

I tell you all this to acquaint you with the fact I am more than a Salesperson. I have management, finance, negotiating and contract skills which I place at your discretion to help sell your home or help you buy a new home.

I have done many different jobs throughout my life and it isn’t over yet. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1974 and being Honorably Discharged I went into the construction field as a bricklayer, concrete finisher and tile setter. I did this through an apprenticeship program with a local union in Southern California.  After 2 ½ years in the apprenticeship I started my own business, with my brother, as a masonry contractor in Riverside California. I did this for about a year and bought a backhoe to begin a new business doing underground utility work. In 1977 I moved to Merced contracting to install underground telephone cable throughout California.

When the economy took a downturn in the 1980’s I sold my equipment and was hired by PG&E. I was trained by PG&E as an Energy Consultant for their customers. I was promoted to the position of New Business Representative in 1983 responsible to meet with new residential customers needing electrical and gas service extensions to their new home. In 1986 I was again promoted to Senior New Business Representative, which is responsible for installation of PG&E’s facilities, coordinating the work with the construction department and obtaining all pertinent contracts to installed PG&E in large commercial developments and new residential sub-divisions. While at PG&E I finished my college education and obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management from the University of San Francisco.

I left PG&E in 1989 to start up another construction business as I was a licensed General Building Contractor and General Engineering Contractor. Construction was good at this time and it appeared as this was the time to be my own boss again. I was doing well until the economy took another downturn in the early 1990s.

After I closed down my business in 1992 I did several jobs, one as a long term substitute teacher in Los Banos at the continuation high school as a math teacher, drove semi-trucks for McClain Pacific in Merced and Frito Lay in Modesto.

In 1994 I was hired by the City of Merced as a Building Inspector. In 1998 I interviewed and promoted to the position as the Chief Building Official in for the City of Merced. I ran the Building Department which was responsible for ensuring that all homes and business being built within the city followed the California Building Code standards. I supervised 25 people within my department which inspected all construction items installed from sewer, water, storm drain, street paving, sidewalks and curb gutter. We did all the fire inspections as well through my department to ensure that each business was in compliance with locale fire regulations. I retired from the city in 2007 and filled in as the Chief Building Official for Cochise County, Arizona.

In December of 2007 I returned to Merced and started a business doing home and property inspections for potential home buyers and banks. My eldest son and I were doing this together and he is continuing on with this business.

I have been married to the same wonderful woman for 44 years and have four adult sons. My wife has been a Realtor for the past 10 years and working for Coldwell Banker for the past 8 year. She has done very well and suggested that I obtain my license and we become a business team. So this past year I studied and passed my licensing test and we are now not only a team in marriage but a team in business.

My wife and I are exciting about this new challenge ahead of us. While I may be new to the real estate field as a Realtor I do have an extensive background through my employment with PG&E, the Building Department and the home inspection business to provide you, our client the very best in service. We understand what it takes to be committed and we take our commitment to you as our client very seriously.

We look forward in being your Real Estate agent now and for all your real estate needs in the future.
